Guest post by Shawn Shivdat from the Chess Empowerment Association. Note: this is updated from the print edition as the tournament has been moved from February 10th to February 24.

Chess Empowerment Association will be hosting our Second Annual Winter Chess Tournament on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at the Mercer University School of Medicine. Registration for the event is now open on our website, chessempowerment.org. There will be one United States Chess Federation (USCF)-rated section of competition, and players who would like to compete in this rated section are encouraged to do so. No previous rating is required to participate; however, players must have a USCF membership, which can be purchased through their website.
The competitor’s USCF membership number is required for registration in the rated section of competition. There will be plenty of competition for non-rated players who are not USCF members. Chess Empowerment Association (CEA) encourages players of all skill levels to participate in the unrated tournament. Participants in both the rated and unrated matches will gain experience in match play. Tournament winners will receive trophies, as well.
Registration for participation in the competition is free, although there is a request for donations of $30 to help with expenses of the tournament. Registration will close by February 8, 2018. The tournament information is as follows:
Date: February 24, 2018 Location: Mercer University School of Medicine
Time: 8:30am-5:30pm Round times: 9am, 10:30am, 1pm, 2:30pm, 4pm
Format: Swiss 5 rounds Unrated
Award Ceremony: 5pm
Due to the addition of a USCF-rated section, CEA will need to cover the costs of purchasing the USCF-required judging software, hiring and covering expenses for a USCF-certified tournament director, paying USCF fees for affiliate organizations, and paying a fee for each rated game played. In addition, we will need to purchase more trophies than usual for a separate section of the tournament. If we cannot cover these costs, CEA will be unable to continue to provide a USCF-rated section at our events. For businesses or organizations interested in providing sponsorships or making donations to support CEA in hosting USCF-rated competitions and tournaments, please contact us on our website. Further information will be provided soon and updated on our website, chessempowerment.org.
