Highlights of events in and around Macon and Middle Georgia for the week of August 11-August 17, 2016. We try to select an eclectic mix of events that one might not think of when planning a day out. If you have suggestions for coming events, please fill out our submission form.


Thursday August 11, In Forsyth, Meadows Gun Club and Shooting School is hosting a 50 Target Fun Shoot. It begins at 5 PM and shooters must be on the course by 7 PM. Entry fee is $30 and includes a round of sporting clays and dinner. Awards for the best 3 in each class and the best overall shooter. Later will be Shooting Under the Lights which begins at 8:30 PM. Wild Wings Café is having Taco and Rita Night with live music by Scott Little. It begins at 5 PM and runs until 10 PM. It features $2 tacos and $3 margaritas. Live music starts at 8:30 PM. The restaurant is located at 5080 Riverside Dr. in the Shoppes at River Crossing.

Ocmulgee Mountain Biking Association is having a Beginner and Chill Ride. Their Facebook page states “New to mountain biking? Just getting back on the bike? Just want a chill, conversation-pace ride? Come out to LH Thomson for a social ride with a slow pace and a focus on having a good time and improving your technical skills. ” It begins at 6 PM at L. H. Thompson Trail, 7800 NE Industrial Blvd in Macon.


Friday August 12, The Benjamin Olsen Trio at the Bearfoot Tavern. The Benjamin Olsen Trio is a three man blues/funk group founded by Benjamin Cummings of The Dirty Doves and includes J.J. Mills and Walt Robinson. It starts at 9 PM and runs to midnight.

Sky Zone Macon at 245 Tom Hill Blvd in Macon is having a $10 60-minute Jump Pass available from 1-3 PM as part of their homeschoolers program. Tickets available at Sky Zone. For more information, consult their homeschooler schedule.


Saturday August 13, Saint Kolbe Feast Day Celebration at the Kolbe Center in Macon. Events include a weekend Mass, presentations and a piano concert. Guest speakers include Damon Owens, author and ETWN television personality and Father Dennis Wilde, associate director of the Priests for Life, professional pianist and former professor of music at Villanova University. Macon Beer Company and Ocmulgee Outdoor Expeditions are having a Boat and Beer Float event which includes a float down the river in a kayak or canoe, a brown bag lunch, brewery tour and a beer tasting. Tickets are $65 for a single person kayak or $130 for a two person canoe and come with the shuttle ride to and from the river and the brewery, lunch, tour, tasting and a souvenir glass. It starts at 11 AM and boats will be in the water around 11:45 AM. Space is limited and tickers can be purchased online.

Soul Train: Taste of the Arts is an event by the Macon Arts Alliance at terminal station, 200 Cherry St in downtown Macon. The event is a fundraiser for local programs such as Arts Roundtable, Ovations365 Arts and Culture Community Calendar, Mill Hill East Macon Arts Village, Amplify Creative Entrepreneur Program, and the Macon Arts Gallery. Featured activities include tasting stations, Silent and Live Auctions, a dance party and photo booth. It runs from 7-10 PM and tickets are $40 in advance and $50 on the same day and are available at Eventbrite.

Antique Steam Engine Demonstration hosted by the Jarrell Plantation Historic Site in Juliette. Visitors will be able to sound the whistle atop the Jarrell Plantation ‘Mill Comple,’ and see their stationary steam engine in action.  It runs from 2 to 4 PM and is $4-$6.50 per person. The address is 711 Jarrell Plantation Rd in Juliette.


Sunday August 14, Rhythm N’ Jazz on the Dock sponsored by the Rhythm N’ Jazz on the Dock Foundation.  The event is at Gateway Park at 301 Riverside Dr. in Macon. Musicians include Ed Dunbar, lead singer of the Drifters, Under The Boardwalk and others. The event is free and runs from 6 to 9 PM.

“A Bigger Splash” presented by the Macon Film Guild at the Douglass Theatre at 355 MLK Blvd. in Macon. This movie is an R rated crime drama directed by Luca Guadagnino and starring Tilda Swinton.


Tuesday August 16, Macon-Bibb County Commission Meeting. 6 to 8 PM at 700 Poplar St. in Macon. The Commission will be voting to accept out of town AllSouth Tubing to replace Ocmulgee Outdoor Expeditions as the concessionaire for tubing, canoeing and kayaking on the river.

Thursday August 4, Deja-Vous Sip N Shop – From 5 PM to 7 PM enjoy some “girl time” with shopping and wine at the Deja Vous Consignment Boutique at 2786 Riverside Dr. in Macon. Door prizes will also be given away.

Friday August 5, First Friday at the Ampersand Guild.  Come enjoy music, art and poetry with “old rockers” John Charles Griffin, Kodac Harrison, and Michael Pierce. These small town musicians, story-tellers and soul food connoisseurs are sure to entertain. Food and drinks as well as CD’s will be for sale. The event location is the Ampersand Guild, 503 5th St, Suite 200 in Macon.

Pokemon GO Night at Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary in Locust Grove. From 6 PM to 10 PM The animal sanctuary will open its gates to people interested in visiting its 6 Pokestops and 2 Pokegyms. The $5 per person entry fee goes to help their mission of providing for the care and upkeep of 1,500 rescued animals in their sanctuary. Be sure to bring cash because they will not be able to run electronic payments. They will be dropping lure modules frequently to keep the flow of Pokemon fast and furious. While walking the facility, dusk is a great time to view their rescued animals and learn a little about nature. The address is 712 L.G. Griffin Rd in Locust Grove.

First Friday at the Tubman Museum features exhibits from two local artists, Timothy Hedden and David Gaither. Timothy Hedden’s exhibit features a collection of folk art and David Gaither’s focuses on the boundaries of abstract and figurative. Tickets are $5 to non-members, but free to members. Light refreshments are include and the event runs from 6 – 8 PM.

Signature Salon has a grand opening event featuring a ribbon cutting, food and gifts. Be sure to check it out and support another on the growing list of downtown businesses. The salon is located at 551 Cherry St in Macon.

Saturday August 6, Macon Beer Company hosts its weekly Tour and Tasting event at their brewery. Come experience a number of tasty and refreshing micro brew beer made right here in Macon. The brewery is at 345 Oglethorpe St in downtown Macon. Doors open at 1 PM and it runs until 6 PM. $12 ticket includes 6-6oz tastings of your choice of Macon Beer Company beers on tap and a MBC pint glass.

Kool-Aid and Canvass is an event for kids 6-12 in which an artists guides children through the process of painting with acrylic paints on a real canvass. The event is $20 and includes all materials and a snack, The class starts at 10 AM in the 567 Center for Renewal at 456 First St in Macon.

Heroes and Villains Comics and Games in Warner Robins will be holding their Big Sale with merchandise up to 50% off. The shop is located at 117 Russel Parkway. Hours are 10 AM to 7 PM.


Sunday August 7, Harvest Church is holding A Conversation About Racism and Faith during 5 services at their church at 3322 US 41N in Byron. Service times are 9 AM, 10:30 AM, 12 PM, 4:30 PM and 6 PM.

The Ampersand Guild will be hosting a “Snack and Chat” and will be discussing Fair Pay for Artists.  Conversation topics will include sharing ideas about making a living as an artist, finding sponsors and defining the artistic marketplace in Middle Georgia.

Pure Barre Macon Olympic Plank Off Come see how long you can hold a plank in the 2016 Plank Off at Pure Barre Macon, 4420 Forsyth Rd. Ste 140 in Macon. Event is at 4:50 PM.
